The "Via Dolorosa" or "Way of Sorrows," winding through the winding streets of the Old City of Jerusalem, begins at the Convent of Ecce Homo and ends at the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre.
But we can perform the "Via Dolorosa" without going to Jerusalem. This ritual allows it. In addition to the beneficial effects of this rite on ourselves and our loved ones, it is also a way to demonstrate our love for Christ our Savior.
Friday is undoubtedly the day when the Old City of Jerusalem is at its most lively. Muslims head to the Al-Aqsa Mosque at the end of the day, while Jews visit the Western Wall at the beginning of Shabbat. And for us Christians, it is the day of the great Stations of the Cross organized by the Franciscans.
This is the traditional route that Jesus followed, carrying his cross. It begins in the Praetorium. (Pontius Pilate's judgment hall) in Antonia, and goes to "Skull Hill" or Golgotha, the site of the Crucifixion. Along this route are the "14 stations" of the Way of the Cross. Each station recalls the memory of an event. Chapels, convents, and monasteries allow pilgrims to meditate.
